A quick reminder to you all. We will be having our final Google Classroom session on Friday at 10am. For this session, prepare something to share with the class. It could be a poem, song, performance with an instrument, or something as simple as a nicely worded goodbye.

I hope that you have a great day.

                                                      Mr McDermott

Wednesday 15.07.20

There will be quite a bit of Google Classroom this week. I will be doing a Google Classroom session tomorrow at 1pm for those of you working from home. If I can arrange cover I should be doing the same on Thursday (1pm). Then on Friday at 10am, we will hold our last session before the holidays begin.

I look forward to seeing lots of your faces over the next few days. I hope you enjoy today's activities.

Stay positive and keep smiling,

Monday 13.07.20

Good morning year 5. I hope that you had a lovely weekend and are feeling well rested and ready for the last week of learning from home, before the summer holidays.

You're parents should have received your reports this weekend. Remind your parents to check their emails if they have not already.

I have attached the slides for today's liturgy and Miss Pluckrose posted another to you on Friday. If you have not yet read this you can use the link below.

I hope you have a lovely day and enjoy the glorious sunshine.

Stay positive and keep smiling,

                                                   Mr McDermott

Friday 10.7.20

Good morning year 5 and happy Friday! I hope that you all have a fantastic day and enjoy today's online lessons.

Your reports are being sent to the office this morning. They will be sent out to your parents either today or over the weekend. The office lots to send out and it is a huge job, so keep them in thoughts and prayers. It is the first time we have sent out reports this way, so remind your parents to check their emails this afternoon and over the weekend.

Sadly, AB has left St Mary's and will be attending a new school in year 6. AB and all of his family will be missed. I wish them every success in their new home and hope the move goes well.

If you want to send me a message, drawing or short video for AB please do so. I will either pass these on via email or post it to our class page.

Stay positive and keep smiling,

                                                   Mr McDermott

I will see you at 1pm!

Have a great day.

If you are working from home today, try not to do the art lesson until after the Google Classroom session.

I may be moving Friday's Google Classroom meeting to tomorrow instead, as I have to send off all of your reports on Friday. Check the page tomorrow for confirmation.

I will try and get some more online sessions set up in the future, but this may prove tricky as I am at school teaching year 6 children during the week at the moment. If I am not available, I will see if a teacher working from home can step in to help out.

I hope that you enjoy today's tasks. You may need a protractor to complete the maths task. If you do not have one, perhaps have a look at yesterday's year 6 maths task instead.

I will be holding another class meeting this Friday at the same time (10am). Hopefully, we will have a few more of your classmates joining us for this session.

Good morning year 5. I hope that you and your families are happy, healthy and ready for another day of learning from home.

Wow what a scorcher it was yesterday and it looks even hotter today! Remember to put on some sun cream and prepare for the beautiful weather. I know it can be difficult to concentrate in very hot conditions, but try your best and I am sure you will produce some great work.

I am extremely proud of all of you. This experience has been difficult for adults to deal with, so to tackle it head on in the positive way that you have is truly remarkable. Please remember that it is okay to have a bad day occasionally. There have been some days where I have let my thoughts and worries get the better of me, but we will come out of this situation stronger and closer than ever.

A big thank you to JT, MB and AS for the recent work, it is now posted for all to see,

I hope you enjoy today's activities and stay as strong and positive as always,

Thursday 18.06.20

Good morning year 5! I hope that you and your families are all doing well and that you are ready for another day of learning from home.

It looks like its going to be another wet and stormy day, so if you are out for your daily walk or exercise be sure to bring an umbrella. Actually, if it was anything like the downpour today you may want to bring a snorkel and flippers.

My cat (Whiskey) came in absolutely drenched and spent the next few hours looking longingly outside.

As usual, I have three new tasks for you to complete today (English, maths & RE). In English, you will be looking at a range of poems by Grace Nichols. Then in maths, you will be solving problems by using line graphs. Your final task is RE, in which you will be starting the new topic of StewardshipI hope that you enjoy today's activities.

Special mention to JT and AS for the recent work, I will add it to the class gallery at some point today. If you would like to have your work displayed in the class gallery just click on the 'stay in touch icon' on the class homepage.

I will speak to again tomorrow, stay positive and keep smiling

Good morning year 5! Monday is once again upon us and it is the start of another week of learning from home.

I hope that you had a lovely weekend and managed to enjoy some of the sunshine. I had a fairly quiet weekend. I enjoyed visiting my parents and spending some, socially distant, time with them in the garden. I hope you are being well behaved for your parents and listening to them. I am counting down the days until I can give my mum and dad a big hug (you never grow too old for hugs).

Whatever you did this weekend, I hope you had fun and that you and your families are well.

As per usual, I have three tasks for you to complete today (English, Maths & RE), I hope you enjoy them.

I have also attached the slides for today's whole school liturgy and Miss Pluckrose's latest letter to you. Please be sure to look through both.

I will speak to you tomorrow. Stay positive and keep smiling,

                                                                                               Mr McDermott

Friday 12.06.20

Good morning year 5! It's FFFFRIDAY! Can you believe that we are at the end of another week of learning from home? I can't, this week has disappeared in the blink of an eye.

I hope that you all are well and that you have that Friday feeling. We may not have all of usual freedoms back yet, but hopefully you are all still excited about the weekend.

I have three new tasks for you to complete today English, maths & RE. It is not the usual Friday maths challenge, this week it is in association with the Premier League. You will have some special football based maths tasks to complete and also a quiz.

Big thank you to MB and JT for the work you sent in.

Have a fabulous weekend filled with fun and sunshine! I will speak to you again on Monday. Stay positive and keep smiling,

Message from Mr McDermott

Tuesday 09.06.20

Good morning year 5, I hope that you and your families are well. I had the pleasure of seeing a few familiar faces yesterday (MB & PZ) when I tested Google Classroom . My apologies to those that tried, but could not join the meeting. We are still getting to grips with the new technology, so there were a few technical issues. However, the whole process was made much easier by the mature  and sensible attitude of those who took part. Thank you very much for being my test subjects. Hopefully, next time it is used, I will be able to have lots more members of the class involved.

As usual I have three more tasks for you today. I hope that you enjoy them.

Thank you to JT, MB and CM for the work and photos that you sent in. Apologies to CM, I was unable to post your profile of Mary Anning as the link to the photo did not work. If you send it in again I will put it on the class page for you.

Stay positive and keep smiling,

                                                    Mr McDermott

As it is a Monday, I have added the slides for the whole school liturgy. Try to get a quiet moment to go through them and reflect.

It is also World Ocean Day today, so I have added a few activities about that for you to complete along with your usual English and maths tasks. As well as this, I have also added the latest letter from Miss Pluckrose to the class page. You can find the link to this below.

Stay positive and keep smiling,

                                                        Mr McDermott

I have three new tasks for you today. As usual, there is an English task, the Friday maths challenge and some more science to complete.

Hopefully, we will be able to have a online meeting soon once Google Classroom has been set up and all of the usernames and passwords have been sorted. It will be so lovely to see all of faces again. Although I must warn you, due to all of the barbers being closed, you may not be able to see me through all of my hair!

I hope that you all have a fantastic and safe weekend.

Stay positive and keep smiling

                                                  Mr McDermott

Thursday 04.06.20

Good morning year 5. Today is Thursday June 4th and it's another day of learning from home. I hope that you enjoyed yesterday's activities and are ready for some more. It looks like the beautiful weather has left us for a while, but I'm sure it will be back before long.

How are you all doing? I hope that you are all well and that you listening to your parents and behaving yourselves, I'm sure that you are. Remember to try to keep up your reading at home. There is nothing better than escaping reality for a while by delving into the pages of a good book.

Ms Hume is still posting music lessons and activities to her class page, so be sure to check them out. Music, singing in particular, is a great way of letting off some steam and expressing yourself, so please take part and give it a go.

Thanks to JT, AS and MB for the work you sent in yesterday. It is always great to receive some work my class and brings a big smile to my face.

I hope you enjoy today's tasks (English, maths & RE) and I will speak to you tomorrow.

I was part of an online meeting yesterday with many other members of staff from St Mary's, it was lovely to see some familiar faces. We were meeting to discuss ways of making the school as safe as possible for children to return. It looks like this process will start next week, with the return of year 6. Hopefully, this will be the start of the journey back to normality and will pave the way for more classes to slowly return to school.

In the meantime, I will be continuing to post work for you daily on our class page. I have three more tasks for you today- English, maths and history. I hope that you enjoy them.

I will speak to you again tomorrow, stay positive and keep smiling

Monday 04.05.20

Good morning year 5. Today is Monday May 4th, otherwise known as StarWars day (May the fourth be with you).

I hope that you and your families are well and have had a good weekend. It looks like we are in for some more lovely weather this week, so that should lift your spirits.

Hopefully, at some point this week I will be able to leave you some voice recordings, as I am sure that you are all really missing the sound of my voice wink. I attempted to leave you a voice message for today. However, I can't seem to get the message to upload, so for now this will have to do.

Today's tasks include English, maths and RE. I hope that you enjoy them. I have also included the slides for the whole school liturgy, so please try to create a quiet and prayerful moment to go through them. This weeks liturgy slides also include audio from Miss Pluckrose. It should be nice to hear a familiar voice again.

Thank you to JT and MB for all of the lovely work you sent me on Friday, it is all now uploaded to the class page.

Also, a big Happy Birthday to MB who had her birthday over the weekend. I am sure that you and your family had a great time.

Stay positive and keep smiling

                                                     Mr McDermott

Friday 01.04.20

Good morning year 5! It is Friday 1st May and the end of the second week of summer term. Well done for all your hard work this week.

It has been such a pleasure to receive your emails and bits of work that you have sent from home. It's been great to hear what some of you are getting up to and all contact is very much appreciated. All of your messages truly brighten my day, so keep it up.

Remember, I am providing work to help keep you busy at home and to make your return to school as easy as possible. Please try to complete what you find manageable and do place unnecessary stress upon yourself. Your mental well being is what is most important, at the moment, so just do what you can.

I have changed a few of the icons on the class page, but they should all still be fairly easy to follow. I have also included details of a competition set up by the wonderful NHS, so get involved.

Big thank you to JT, CM and AB for all of the lovely work that you sent in yesterday. Well done!!

I hope that you and your families have a lovely weekend.

Stay positive and keep smiling,

                                                  Mr McDermott

Thursday 30.04.20

Good morning year 5. Today is Thursday 30th April, 2020 and it's the last day of April. It is hard to believe that we are already at the end of April.

I hope that you and all of your families are happy and well. It looks like it is going to be another wet day, but possibly slightly better than the recent weather. Remember to stay positive regardless and listen to your parents, especially if they too are having to work from home.

Thanks to AS for some lovely work I have added it to the class gallery page. All three sections of the class gallery are now filled with lots of work, make sure that you have a look. If you would like to see some of your own work displayed, please send it in. You can find the details of how to send in work, when you click on the Stay in Touch star.

Stay positive and keep smiling,

                                                      Mr McDermott

Wednesday 29.04.20

Good morning year 5, today is 29th April. Yesterday was a very rainy day. I hope you were able to do some exercise and go for a walk between the showers. Remember the Joe Wicks workout is available on Youtube and is a great way of staying active, during periods of poor weather.

Even if the sun is not shining, we can still be positive and thankful for all that we have. Thank you to PZ for sending in me some more maths and English work. I have added to the class page.

My apologies for there not being a new riddle yesterday. I updated the page, but it didn't seem to save.

I have set you an English, maths and art task today, I hope you enjoy them.

Stay positive and keep smiling

                                                 Mr McDermott

Tuesday 28.04.20

Good morning year 5, I hope that you and your families are doing well. Today is Tuesday and sadly, it looks like the lovely weather has left us for a while.
Thank you to everyone who has sent in photos of their hard work, it has really been a pleasure to look through it all and add it to the class page. I am really missing you all at the moment. Seeing your work and photos of your smiling faces has been a great joy, so thanks (ZS, PZ, AS, MB & SM).

My cat has been loving the recent weather and has been strolling in and out of the house like she owns the place. I never thought I would see the day, when my cat has a better social life than I do. I have added some photos of her basking in the sunshine. She loves stretching out in the long grass, but looks a little confused today, as I have mown the lawn (Photos are from Sunday, before the mow).

Today's tasks include English, maths and history. I hope that you enjoy them.

Stay positive and keep smiling

                                                   Mr McDermott.

Monday 27.04.20

Please have a look and remember to also look through all of the excellent work that has already been uploaded by your classmates. Ms Hume has also been adding daily music content, so remember to check that out too.

Today's tasks include English, maths and RE. I hope that you enjoy them.

Stay positive and keep smiling,

                                                  Mr McDermott.

Friday 24.04.20

Good morning year 5. It is Friday! I hope that you and your families are doing well and are feeling ready for the weekend. Did you remember to clap for the brave NHS workers last night? I'm sure you did. What a fantastic job they are all doing.

I hope you completed some of yesterday's tasks and that they are helping to fill your time. I have set an English, maths and science task for you to complete today.

A special mention to PZ for all of the work that you sent in, you have obviously been working very hard. It is all now proudly displayed in the, new and improved, class gallery.

I have now split the class gallery up into 3 different sections. There is a section for art work, a section for written/maths work and section for any projects you are getting up to at home.

Have a lovely weekend, get plenty of rest and I will see you on Monday.

Stay positive and keep smiling,

                                                  Mr McDermott

I hope you are all doing well and enjoying your time at home with your families. It looks like today is going to be another day of lovely weather. The world always seems like a better place when the sun is shining and the birds are singing.

I hope you managed to complete some of yesterday’s tasks and found them enjoyable.

Today’s tasks include writing some of your own poetry in English, more work on decimals in maths and a 'still life' art task.

Tuesday 21st April

Good morning year 5, I hope that you managed to get a little  bit of the sunshine yesterday and found the work I set achievable. Another new day awaits and today is also The Queen's 94th birthday. I have included a few activities about this at the bottom of today's daily tasks.

Today in English, you will be studying some more poetry, recapping decimals in maths and starting the topic of Ancient Egypt in history.

I have also changed the riddle of the day and included yesterday's answer.

Please try to take a look at the Artist of the Week section of the class page and send in any photos from home. I would love to see some of your artwork.

Also, remember to check out Ms Hume's page for some musical fun.

Stay positive and keep smiling.

                                                     Mr McDermott
