It is important that children are reading each evening at home. This could be your child reading to you or someone reading to them. This will help them with their phonics throughout the year by decoding words, blending sounds and reading fluidly. I also encourage children to read different types of texts that may be at home to broaden their vocabulary and enhance their understanding.
Reading records will go home daily along with one book (2 books will be given as children develop throughout the year). It is important that both the reading record and book ALWAYS remain in your child's red bag as they may be asked to read in school at any time. It is also important that you comment on your child's reading in order to liaise effectively between home and school. At St Mary’s we follow the Oxford Reading Tree scheme. As children progress in their reading and comprehension they will move up levels in the scheme.
