Reception - Miss Swan

Welcome to Miss Swan’s Class Page

Thank you!

Thank you parents and children for your special cards and generous gifts. It has been a pleasure getting to know you and your children. Have a happy and safe summer. Love from Miss Swan and Mrs Cooling

Summer 2

We can’t quite believe that it is the last term this academic year! Find out about what we have been learning about this term. Thank you for your support as always.

Our Learning and Interests

This term we are learning about ‘Traditional Tales’. We are reading 'Little Red Riding Hood'. We have been listening to the story, acting out the story, learning story words and actions to retell the story and writing the story!

We are learning about:

  • 3D shapes, everyday objects and their characteristics
  • Doubling
  • Halving
  • Sharing

Music Week

We made our own instruments at home to celebrate ‘World Music Day’. We performed a song with them in school with Miss Hume. In class we have learnt the song ‘When Goldilocks Went to the House of the Bears’. We used real instruments to add to the song. We experimented with the sounds we made and changed some of the words in the song.

Art Week

This year the theme was ‘Humans and Happiness’. We talked about what and who makes us happy. We created ‘Fancy Hats & Hair do’s’ with the company ‘Arty Party’, made someone who makes us happy out of model magic clay and painted what makes us happy. Have a look at some of our artwork in the slideshow below!

Our Classroom

We have been practicing writing our names. We hope you like our self-portraits!

Our classroom has an area called ‘The Workshop’. We love to use ‘junk modelling’ (recycling) to create things. Please save and bring in any small cardboard boxes and kitchen roll tubes. We cannot use toilet roll tubes due to hygiene reasons. Thank you!

This is the ‘Home Corner’ and ‘Mark Making Area’. We love to role play, draw, create and write.

This is the ‘Book Corner’. We love to read stories, non-fiction, poems and rhymes. We like to use the puppets to retell and act out stories. We have a range of books about different topics with diverse characters. We use the 'Self Registration' to show who is in each day. We talk about how many children are here today and how many children are not here. It's great for understanding our numbers. We use our phonics display to help us read and write.

Please donate any wellies that no longer fit your child. We are creating a messy play area outside and would like wellies to protect the children’s school shoes. Thank you!

Our Class

Our teacher is called Miss Swan and our teaching assistant is called Mrs Cooling. We are a fun and curious class. We love to explore our indoor classroom and outdoor classroom to help us develop in all areas of the curriculum.

In Reception we learn by leading our own play, and by taking part in play which is guided by Miss Swan and Mrs Cooling. We always have an excellent balance of activities led by us, and activities led or guided by our teachers.

EYFS Curriculum

In Reception there are 7 areas of learning - the prime areas and specific areas.

The prime areas underpin all that we do in the EYFS. These areas lay the foundations for a child's success in all areas of learning.

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development

The specific areas provide the experiences and opportunities to broaden your child's skills and knowledge.

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design
