Reception Weekly Challenge - Autumn 1 Week 4 2022

Each week there will be a new challenge for your child to complete. The challenges will relate to what we have been learning that week or what we will be learning next.

Please visit your child’s class page on the school website each Friday to find out about the Weekly Challenge. All challenges will be posted on the class page. Your child may be given a resource or an activity to complete.

Today your child has brought home a pack called ‘Phonics Cards.’

In the pack there will be:

  • Sound cards

As part of our daily RWI Phonic sessions, we have been learning how to pronounce different sounds.

On the front of each card is the written sound – for example ‘s’.

On the back of each card is a picture with a phrase – for example ‘sssssnake’.

What they need to do:

You need to hold the card with the sound side facing out so your child can see it (e.g. s). Your child will say the sound. If they are unsure of the sound please show them how to say it and show them the back of the card (e.g. sssssnake) to help. This challenge is to be done regularly until your child can do it by themselves. The children are familiar with doing this activity in class.

There is also a phrase to help your child learn the correct letter formation – for example ‘Slither down the snake’. There is a sheet to help your child practise writing the letters. You do not need to return the sheets.

This week’s sounds are:

m a s d

Please practise saying the sounds together each day.

Please visit the link below for a demonstration of how to say the sounds:

Please keep your child’s ‘Phonics Cards’ pack in their book bag so we can add more cards for the next Weekly Challenge.

Any questions or queries, please ask a member of the Reception team.

Best wishes,

Miss Swan and Miss Rodger
