Remote education provision: information for parents and carers

This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education where national or local restrictions require children, entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home.

The remote curriculum: what is taught to pupils at home?

A pupil’s first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching.

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being sent home?

We aim to teach children remotely at home from the first day of any isolation period or lockdown.  We will use Google Classroom for live sessions and to deliver independent work for your child to complete each day.

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we have needed to make some adaptations in some subjects. For example, maths and English will be taught each day plus one other lesson from the foundation curriculum subjects, Religious Education Lessons will be taught each week. French lessons will not be taught at the moment.

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take pupils broadly the following number of hours each day:

Accessing remote education

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

All remote learning will take place using Google Classroom, with live sessions and set work accessed through this portal. Occasionally, teachers may put some work on their class page on the school website.

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:

• We have a limited amount of laptops and tablets that we can lend to pupils. 
• We also have some internet dongles that we can lend so that pupils can connect to the internet.
• We have asked teachers to limit the amount of work that requires printing.  If you are needing to print any work out for your child and cannot do so, please contact us so that we can help.  
• Pupils should submit work to their teachers through Google Classroom. If they do not have online access work can be handed in to the school and we will pass it on to the teacher.
• Please contact the school office for information about any of this information and we will do our best to help. 

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:

• 3 live teaching sessions each day (online lessons) and 3 pieces of work that children can complete independently.
• Teachers may use some recorded teaching (e.g. Oak National Academy lessons, video/audio recordings made by teachers)
• Commercially available websites supporting the teaching of specific subjects or areas, including video clips or sequences, such as BBC Bitesize etc
• Computer programmes to support learning such as Mathletics, Lexia and Times Tables Rock Stars
• Printed paper packs produced by teachers can be requested if you cannot get online and we cannot help you to do this (e.g. workbooks, worksheets)

Engagement and feedback

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

We expect our pupils to engage with remote education each day.  We ask that parents support their child to access the online sessions and the independent work and to set routines to support their child’s education

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

Teachers will check each day if children are engaging with remote education.  They will take a register each lessons and report those not attending during the day to the school office and SLT.

If we are concerned that children are not accessing remote leaning or cannot do so, the teachers will make contact with the parent to offer assistance.  Where lack of engagement becomes a concern, a member of senior staff will contact the parent to offer help

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are effective methods, amongst many others. Our approach to feeding back on pupil work is as follows:

• Teachers will feedback verbally to pupils during the 3 live sessions each day
• Teachers will feedback to one piece of work submitted each day by the pupil on Google Classroom

Additional support for pupils with particular needs

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:

• We will work with families to deliver remote education for pupils with SEND through other means rather than the 3 whole class live sessions.  This may include individual sessions with the teacher or teaching assistant, printed work, or reading remotely with an adult for example. 
• Our remote education is available for children in the Early Years reception class in line with the other phase groups.  Teachers will deliver 3 short live sessions each day which may include phonics work, counting and simple maths activities, RE and story time for example. 

Remote education for self-isolating pupils

Where individual pupils need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, how remote education is provided will likely differ from the approach for whole groups. This is due to the challenges of teaching pupils both at home and in school.

If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?

Where children are self-isolating but their class is in school will be supported remotely with a mix of live sessions with the teacher and teaching assistant and independent work.  Please see or policy for more information.
