Primary School Transfer

Children start primary school in the September of the year that they reach five years old.

Many children will already have been at a nursery and so will have some experience of being away from home and their parents and with other children in a 'school type' setting.

Many of the children who come into St Mary's Reception Class have been at our nursery and so are used to the school and how it operates.

Do not worry if your child has not been to nursery before as we will help them to settle into school life quickly and easily.

Secondary School Transfer

Children transfer to secondary school at the end of Year 6 when they are 11.

We recommend parents make more than one choice as there is no guarantee of admission to your first choice of school.

Admissions criteria do vary: siblings, proximity to the school, selection tests and Catholicity, in the case of Catholic schools, tend to be the most significant factors in the allocation of places.

You may appeal against any decision to refuse your child admission to a secondary school.

Information about secondary schools is provided in the autumn term, when parents are invited to attend an information evening at the school.
